Is There Any Twinge of Regret Among the Anti-Abortion Justices?

First thought was, Betteridge's law says "no".

Second thought, I bet the final paragraph says "no".

Final paragraph:

So no, I don’t think the Dobbs justices are sorry...

The great thing about the NYT is that it's so digestible.

Didn't see anyone else mention this, so putting it here. The battery pack is Apple confessing that they didn't solve the nausea problem. If the battery is on your waist it can be as big as you like. 4 hours. 8 hours. It's two hours because if you use it more than two hours you'll puke, then sue Apple for making you puke.

Note that the device is mostly aimed at people who will use it for work. Work is the context in which people will keep using it long after they're starting to feel sick, because imposter syndrome makes them think they need to go a bit further to "pull their weight". And that's the best case. Some bosses will make employees wear it until they're permanently disabled, because you can replace employees but you can't replace a missed bonus. There will be lawsuits, and Apple's defense is that using the device while it's charging is against their explicit instructions.

I've been looking forward to virtual reality since the 90s. I always assumed the nausea problem was solveable. It's not. The idea is dead.

Heard someone in tech(can’t remember who) saying the low latency in this one apparently is enough to make the motion sickness issue less severe. Not sure if that’s speculation on their part but it makes sense.

Just realised that the annoying roadworks at the asshole intersection, where I always get honked at by cars I can't see, is in fact them fixing the asshole intersection ❤️

I would cheerfully pay $3500 to not be trapped in Apple's playpen. But Third Room is free.

Congratulations to Mark McGowan. When leaders cling onto power it's a warning sign that the political system is dysfunctional. Last election Labor won 53 out of 59 seats, which is also a warning sign. Mark McGowan's resignation suggests that maybe the system is healthy after all.

The Fediverse very much living the sterotype this morning: the only Eurovision content in my feed is people complaining about all the Eurovision content in their feeds.

Voting in the Sozialwahl. It's not an especially consequential election, but it's the closest to democracy I've experienced for a while. Time was I'd vote in three countries: national elections in UK and Australia, local elections in Germany. These days I think I'm completely disenfranchised.

For the record, I believe in universal suffrage, in both the strong and weak forms. The weak form says that if you live in a place, you should be able to vote in that place's elections, without regard to age, citizenship status, legal status, or any other qualification. The strong form says that you should be able to vote without regard to age, citizenship status, legal status, or any other qualification.

Okey dokey, Bruce Schneier, of all people, and @Henry Farrell literally suggesting we make a LLM president. Now, finally, I'm starting to worry, since apparently LLMs have begun eating brains and replacing our friends.

A.I. chatbots could run national electronic town hall meetings and automatically summarize the perspectives of diverse participants. This type of A.I.-moderated civic debate could also be a dynamic alternative to opinion polling.

I have more to say on this which is as yet unpublished but the _very_ short version is that democracies are shoggoths too.

A summary of military attitudes to HIV among soldiers:

Today I ran a profiler and made some code run dramatically faster based on the results. So it's worth noting that, whatever the propaganda, this is worth doing at a frequency statistically indistinguishable from never. It's lies. It's all lies.

I think I found a bug. All my Sims have stopped their daily routines and their current status just says "building the Basilisk".

SBS left the "I prefer the Walmart parking lots" quote at the very end of the article, without comment. Addon cron hooks not working - how to debug?

About a month ago cron jobs from my custom addons mysteriously stopped working. (It says a lot that I only just noticed!) Functions added with the "cron" hook are never being run.

I'm trying to debug how these hooks are supposed to be called, and getting nowhere. I'm starting to wonder if they even get called at all? It's really hard to figure out the code path. Every time I find a function with "cron" in the name, it has a comment claiming that it runs cron jobs, but in fact it adds a row to a database or forks a subprocess or executes a new process or something.

Can someone point me to the place in the code where addon cron jobs are supposed to be directly run?

OK, I answered my own question and found my bug. The answer as where cron jobs are run from is Worker\ForkHook\ForkHook::execute(). And an uncaught exception in there will prevent any other cron jobs running. In my case the uncaught exception came from Photo::Store, when given this photo: https://images.sbs.com.au/85/20/3010422f452a827683f4f6a2e654/20230223001766790659-original.jpg?imwidth=1280.

Are there really people who think it's rude to start an IM conversation with the topic at hand instead of just "Hi"? Is that really a thing?

I invented a new drinking game. Whenever someone says "abstract syntax tree", everyone has to stop drinking.

Not a very good game TBH.

The island nation of Palau has a population of just 18,233 people, and yet it has 16 states, each of which managed to choose a completely fine flag. Distinctive, recognisable, colourful, harmonious, and just generally not ugly.

Again: how did America get this way?

The existence of "why did the chicken cross the road" implies a whole genre of similar jokes that came before. Listeners in taverns and coach stops heard the familiar rythym of a "why did the X cross the Y" joke, and the actual conclusion was so shocking, it wasn't just hilarious, it displaced and discredited every previous variant. Today that entire corpus is tears in the rain, save for one curious fossil.

Wait, what? Really?

Time and again, new plumes of smoke rise up in the field from fresh impacts.

As simple as that, the Ukrainian military shares the picture from drones with other units via link-only live streams on YouTube.

It was a true Christmas miracle. Brother was fighting brother, but in one beautiful moment of shared humanity, each soldier dropped their weapon and agreed that at least for one day, they could all tag their posts with #QuoteTweets so that the rest of us could just filter that shit out.

I was once baffled to discover that gender-api.com claims to be able to "determine the gender of an email address", a ludicrous claim.

However, thanks to the advanced technology of genders.wtf, I have been able to one-up this feat, and I am proud to announce that we can now gender fediverse instances.

Uncanny. @Effy Elden

oh no! Curious to see how a post like this should be displayed titleless. Probably best to just fallback to some default.
Oh dear. This goes deeper than I thought.
